Increasing the efficiency of universities in the UK could damage the standard of the education they provide, it has been claimed.

Roger Brown, professor of higher education policy at Liverpool Hope University, explained reducing public financial support and increasing private funding of such learning institutes could not only lower the standard of education, but also mean that universities are dominated by students from increasingly middle-class backgrounds.

Writing in the Guardian, he said: "Far from increasing the value society gains from its investment in higher education, excessive competition actually reduces it, with the US as the classic case."

Mr Brown s comments follow figures recently published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, which revealed almost 40 per cent of universities will see their funding cut in real terms this year.

While 7.4 billon will be given to universities and colleges over the next academic year, the London School of Economics and Political Science, for example, will see its grant cut by 6.5 per cent.

The operations of several departments at City College Plymouth are to be downsized as part of budget cuts at the education institute.

According to the Plymouth Herald, the college needs to cut 1.2 million from this year's spending and is to streamline its art, sport, leisure and construction courses or get rid of them completely.

The college has said that public sector cuts by the new Government have left it with little money from adult learner and other funding schemes, while 53 jobs are said to be at risk of redundancy.

A spokesman told the newspaper: "Unfortunately, we are unable to fund [them]. However, we did this in the knowledge that there are other providers in the locale, so the provision for the area is not lost."

The vice-principal of University College Plymouth Marjon, Dr Geoff Stoakes, recently announced that applications are up but the number of available places are down this year, due to funding cuts.
