Transferring or resigning membership

ATL membership is for a 12-month period.

The subscription amount is an annual fee although members may pay this in instalments. Your renewal date will either be your original join date or from the expiry date of your last payment (if you are unclear of this date please check the expiry date of your last ATL or AMiE membership card).

The full fees for the calendar year must be paid before a member may resign or transfer to another category of membership. If payment is outstanding when a member cancels his or her payments, the outstanding amount will remain on his or her record.

Subject to the approval of ATL's Executive Committee, a member may transfer to another appropriate category of membership, without further election, by giving notice in writing to either ATL's London office or the AMiE office in Market Harborough if you are a member of the leadership section. Unless the Executive Committee otherwise decides, such transfer will become effective at the end of the subscription year in which the notice is given.

It is important for members to note that information received after the end of the calendar year cannot be actioned until the end of the following year. ATL's membership department sends written confirmation of any amendment made to membership categories and the amount to be collected before money is taken.

If a member has retired, he or she may wish to transfer to the retired membership rate so that he or she still receives copies of ATL's Report magazine (or ELM if you are a leadership member) and can still enjoy the discounts and services offered to ATL members. If a member is still working but not teaching, he or she can transfer to ATL's associate rate and still receive mailings from ATL. Retired or associate members will not receive legal support or advice from ATL on matters arising after their transfer from standard membership.

Any member may resign his or her membership and cease to be a member and to be eligible for any benefits of membership by sending his or her resignation in writing to either ATL's London office or the AMiE office in Market Harborough if you are a member of the leadership section. Unless the member specifically requests an earlier date, the resignation will take effect from the end of their current subscription year. The full subscription for the year of resignation will still be payable and the member will not be entitled to the refund of any part of such subscription.

If you are unclear or require confirmation of your expiry date, please contact the ATL membership department on tel: 020 7782 1602, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, or via email. If you are an AMiE member please telephone us on 01858 411541, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, or contact us via email

Please have your membership number to hand when telephoning and include it with any correspondence - this will help us to answer your query more quickly.
