Representing members in the independent sector
ATL is the largest single union in the independent sector with approximately 20,000 members.
This 'independent' section of the website is designed to supplement the information on the rest of the ATL website by addressing the specific issues and concerns of the independent sector.
We know that while there are many universal issues in education, there are also significant differences between the independent and state maintained sector. Unlike the state sector, there are no national pay and conditions, no standard book of rules. Consequently, there are significant differences in terms and conditions of employment including pay, as well as differences in ethos and culture.
From this section, you can:
- browse the advice section on pay, pensions, conditions of service and education issues - all written specifically for independent schools members (you can also download or read sections of ATL's work-life balance toolkit for independent schools from this section)
- download copies of ATL's newsletter for independent schools members, Independent Teachers and read articles of interest to independent schools members
- read about ATL's activities in the independent sector - news on recognition, the independent sector conference, how to contact ATL and the independent and private sector advisory group
- join ATL.
