GTCE elections 2008

Three ATL members have been elected to the General Teaching Council of England (GTCE) following elections in February and March 2008. ATL has also appointed two members to seats.

Of the 64 seats on the council, 25 are open to teachers registered with the GTCE. Five ATL members put themselves forward for election and three were successful:

Andy Connell, who teaches history and general studies at Appleby comprehensive school in Cumbria. Andy is in his fourth decade as ATL school rep, was an elected member of GTCE from 2000-2004 and has written articles in The Times Educational Supplement.

Alice Robinson, who teaches in Lancaster, has served on the ATL Executive for over 10 years, on the Lancashire branch for more than 18 years, and was an elected member of GTC from 2000 to 2004. In recent years she has been convenor for ATL specialist task groups on leadership and the 14-19 curriculum.

Biologist Tom Trust is retired from full-time teaching but continuing in the profession as a supply teacher. He is on the Qualifications and Standards Committee and was a member of the group that considered the ATL's position on accountability last year.

Following an election at the February 2008 meeting of the Executive Committee, ATL appointed Gill Stainthorpe and Caroline Kolek to its two allocated seats among the nine GTCE governing council seats filled directly by the teaching unions this year.
