Problems with downloads

Why does it take so long to download a page or a PDF file?

The speed of your connection to the Internet affects the time it takes to load web pages. A modem with a minimum speed of 28.8kbps is usually recommended.

If you are using a slow modem connection, pages with lots of images can take longer to download. If you are just looking for text-based information, you could turn off the images setting in your browser.

Otherwise, your options are to check the quality of your phone line (ask your telephone company to check the ‘gain’ on the line), upgrade to a quicker Internet connection such as broadband, or tweak your existing computer setup so it works at optimum level.

Try reinstalling the drivers you got on the CD-Rom that came with it or, even better, check the manufacturer's website to see if there are later versions.

Look for instructions on how to uninstall the current versions as this could be important to get the new ones working properly.

If you have no luck, consider checking out the performance of your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Many internet magazines have performance tables for ISPs on their back pages, so you can see how well yours does.
