Thousands of Scottish children returned to school this week to learn under the new Curriculum for Excellence.
Cabinet Secretary for Education Michael Russell MSP marked the occasion by visiting the Cardinal Newman High School in Bellshill.
"The modern world is changing rapidly and what Scottish employers are looking for from job seekers is evolving at the same rate," he said. "Our young people will need to be creative, resourceful, flexible, confident and responsible to succeed in the new global economy."
Mr Russell noted that the new Curriculum for Excellence is designed to help children develop the skills they need for the future.
He added that teachers have been working very hard to prepare for its rollout.
The Scottish government is running a number of Engage for Education events over the coming months, giving parents, teachers and students the chance to voice their opinions on school-related issues.
