GCSE pass rate increases in Wales

25 August 2010

GCSE pass rate increases in Wales

The number of Welsh students obtaining five A* to C-grade passes in their GCSE exams increased by 0.9 per cent to 66.4 per cent this year.

However, this is still behind England, where 69.1 per cent of pupils reached this benchmark.

Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones has congratulated students, saying the young people of Wales should be proud as these are the country's best-ever set of results.

"It is encouraging to see an increase in the number of young people taking Welsh second languages at GCSE. Results also indicate there is continued interest and success in the key areas of science and mathematics," he commented.

Mr Jones added that the number of students taking the Welsh Baccalaureate at intermediate level has increased significantly over the last year.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph this week, Richard Cairns, Headteacher at Brighton College, said he would like to see the introduction of a GCSE grade quota.
