Investigation launched into incorrect chemistry grades

Northern Ireland Education Minister Caitriona Ruane has launched an investigation into how some A-level chemistry students received incorrect results.

According to the BBC, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) will carry out the inquiry.

A marking error in the multiple choice part of the A2 exam meant that more than 150 students were given lower grades than they actually achieved.

"The first stage will look specifically at this particular failure, while the second stage will be a more detailed review of processes and practices within Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment," said Ms Ruane.

Students, parents and teachers need to have confidence in the exam system, she commented.

The minister added that she hopes to receive the first report by the end of the month.

A-level pass rates increased to a record 97.6 per cent this year, with 26 per cent of candidates achieving an A or A* grade.
