New DVD launched for Gaelic early years teachers

The Scottish Department of Education has launched a new DVD designed to help Gaelic early years teachers make the most of the Curriculum for Excellence.

It features practical examples of the curriculum in action and highlights the many ways that pupils can develop their language skills.

Education Secretary Michael Russell MSP said the Curriculum for Excellence is designed to "bring learning to life" and offer a joined-up approach for children between the ages of three and 18.

"Children learning Gaelic in the earliest years of their education have the best opportunity to be able to use the language in everyday life," he commented.

The DVD contains ideas on how to teach Gaelic in nurseries and how to get children used to the language through songs and poems, Mr Russell added.

In other Scottish education news, ministers gave approval earlier this week for the merger of three Glasgow colleges.

From today (September 1st), the Nautical, Central and Metropolitan Colleges will become the City of Glasgow College.
