'No surprises' in new Scottish Curriculum

'No surprises' in new Scottish Curriculum

Scotland's schools secretary has said teachers within the country cannot claim they have not had adequate time to prepare for the new Curriculum for Excellence (CfE).

Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Michael Russell MP said that claims from some factions of the teaching sector that not enough information has been provided about the new CfE by the Executive were inaccurate.

He told the Times: "One of the understandings of this is that there is more responsibility on teachers and they are not going to get everything on a plate.

"There is requirement to work to change methodology but there has been an awful lot of useful supporting material to help them do so."

He added that many schools have been preparing for the implementation of the CfE since 2006, citing Balfron High in Stirlingshire as one example.

The new CfE has been designed with a remit of providing a more coherent, flexible and enriched curriculum for pupils in Scotland aged three to 18.
