Education watchdog Ofqual has published new criteria for all science GCSEs offered in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The new standards are designed to ensure that all pupils require a greater understanding of science, additional science, additional applied science, biology, chemistry and physics in order to pass GSCE exams in the subjects.
Hilary Leevers, assistant director for the Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE), said: "Mathematical knowledge is essential for proper use of the sciences and should be incorporated into the curriculum and in examinations."
However, while she welcomed the new Ofqual criteria, she added that too many children are currently not offered the full range of choices when deciding which science subjects to take to GCSE level, despite science skills being highly valued by employers.
Ofqual created the new science guidelines in partnership with the Department of Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills in Wales and the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment in Northern Ireland.
