The Scottish National Party (SNP) has announced that it is to provide funding for 3,000 additional places at universities in Scotland next year.
Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Fiona Hyslop MSP announced the £8.6 million investment by the Scottish Executive at the SNP's 75th Annual Conference yesterday.
Ms Hyslop told delegates: 'The Scottish Government will provide £8.6 million to support 3,000 additional students this academic year.
'That's a ten per cent increase in student numbers this year [
] and these student places are focused on those crucial STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.'
Ms Hyslop also announced in her speech that the Curriculum for Excellence, due to come into effect in April, will place emphasis on the teaching of Scottish history, with resources available for the teaching of over 200 topics within the subject.
The SNP conference is being held in Inverness and will run from 15 October to 18 October.
