School secretary announces education cuts

Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families Ed Balls MP has announced details of some of the cuts which can be expected within the education sector.

Mr Balls has been charged with cutting £500 million from his department's budget by 2013, and has identified teacher training bursaries as one area which will be targeted in order to make £50 million-worth of savings.

He told MPs to expect "a seven per cent cut in […] non-protected budgets", according to the UK Press Association (UKPA).

Mr Balls also said: "I've identified savings of over £300 million [and] these include £135 million from NDPBs [non-departmental public bodies]."

Specific organisations identified for budget reductions included Becta, which was established to ensure the effective deployment and use of technology in schools, UKPA reports.

The Training and Development Agency, which is the national organisation responsible for the training and improvement of the schools workforce, has also reportedly been singled out for cuts.
