Scottish school trials energy monitor

Scottish school trials energy monitor

Students from a number of institutions in Perthshire, Scotland are to test a new energy-efficiency monitor in a bid to help their schools reduce energy consumption.

The scheme is being run in conjunction with Ewgeco, which suppliers the monitors and was formed by a mother of a pupil attending one of the participating schools, reports the BBC.

Speaking to the new provider about the initiative, Headteacher of Kenmore Primary School Anne Burrell said the project was in keeping with the school's own 'eco-school aims' and adds another tool for children to use to study energy conversation.

Ewgeco's website describes the monitor as a real-time device that can measure electricity, gas and water usage. It then costs the levels of water and energy used and provides information on how much CO2 is generated as a result of the usage.

Also commenting on the scheme, Council Leader Ian Miller said the area wants to 'raise awareness among young people about the simple ways to avoid wasting energy like switching off lights and electrical equipment when they are not needed, and making sure taps are turned off'.
