Scottish students 'will learn about Jimmy Reid'

Scottish students 'will learn about Jimmy Reid'

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond says he will make the late union leader Jimmy Reid's famous 1972 Glasgow University rectorial speech available to every secondary school pupil in the country.

Speaking after Mr Reid's funeral yesterday (August 19th), education secretary Michael Russell AM said the First Minister's plans will be warmly welcomed across Scotland.

"Jimmy used to say that he had to discover Scottish history for himself as it was not taught to pupils of his generation. Fortunately, that is no longer true but we always need to keep updating what is studied and read, and I have no doubt that Jimmy's vision, humanity and wisdom are a lesson to us all," he commented.

The rectorial address, along with biographical information, videos and audio clips, will be brought together to form a comprehensive tribute and learning resource, Mr Russell stated.

He added that the government will ensure it is promoted to teachers as suitable for inclusion within the Curriculum for Excellence.

Football manager Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to Mr Reid yesterday, saying that he had always been about helping the underprivileged.
