Just ten minutes of quality reading time every day can boost a child's literacy skills, it has been claimed.
Speaking at the launch of the Welsh Assembly Government's new literacy campaign, Education Minister Leighton Andrews AM said he wants children to develop a love of reading.
"Strong basic skills developed from an early age can have a huge impact on a person's life. The ability to read, and read well, helps young people as they access the wider curriculum and further down the line when looking for work," he commented.
Entitled Take Five, Read for Ten, the initiative aims to encourage parents to spend a little time every day reading with their children.
Speaking earlier this week, Schools Minister Nick Gibb MP said it is important that children master the basics of reading, writing and maths before they go on to secondary school.
This year's Sats results revealed that one in five children are not reaching the expected level in English or maths by the age of 11.
