Universities 'have role to play' in Welsh economic recovery

Universities 'have role to play' in Welsh economic recovery

Businesses should take advantage of the knowledge and research expertise available within the higher education sector to aid Wales' economic recovery, it has been claimed.

Director of innovation and engagement at Cardiff University's School of Engineering Professor Phil Bowen is to address the National Assembly in a briefing designed to encourage ministers to exploit the HE sector for the benefit of business.

Professor Bowen told Wales Online: "Wales' economic recovery is fragile and businesses need all the help they can get.

"One of the ways businesses can be helped is to exploit and take advantage of the pool of research, facilities and expertise that Welsh universities have to offer."

The professor cited Cardiff University's Knowledge Transfer Centre (KTC) within its School of Engineering as an example of a facility which has collaborated with businesses on industrial research designed to benefit Wales.

The KTC was established with funding from the Welsh National Assembly and works with businesses within the environment, performance engineering and green communications sectors.
