A review of education spending in Wales has been confirmed by the country's National Assembly.
The review, announced by Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning Leighton Andrews AM, follows the release of statistics last month showing £527 less per pupil per year is spent on Welsh schoolchildren compared to their English counterparts.
Mr Andrews told Wales Online the review would mark the beginning of "taking forward the First Minister's commitment to refocus educational investment to ensure that more money reaches the front line".
He added that the second stage of the review will be charged with "exploring in more detail potential opportunities that have been identified which require further development".
The review began its initial research on 18 January this year and is expected to make its first series of recommendations in March, the website reports.
Mr Andrews took over responsibility for the Welsh education portfolio from Jane Hutt AM in December 2009.
