Welsh pupils 'top international science league'

Welsh pupils 'top international science league'

Pupils from Wales spend more time in science classes than in 33 other countries of the world, new figures have revealed.

According to a new study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Welsh pupils approaching sixth form study spend an average of four hours per week studying science subjects, placing them ahead of all the other sample countries surveyed.

Education expert Professor David Reynolds told the Western Mail: "Wales does have the highest provision in the sample, which reflects that science today is more prevalent."

However, he added: "Science is resource intensive [… and] the investment of hours isn't paralleled by the results because there aren't the resources available."

Wales came 15th in the OECD survey when ranked by results, falling behind countries such as Austria, Ireland and Belgium, with Finland taking the top spot.

The OECD was established to help governments across the globe tackle poverty through economic growth.
