Joining ATL's Executive Committee

ATL's Executive Committee is elected every two years to run ATL and to develop every aspect of its policy, work and services.

The Executive Committee acts on resolutions passed at the annual Conference, and operates through a number of committees. The Executive Committee comprises around 63 members elected from electoral districts made up from local ATL branches, plus eight national officers (presidential sequence, honorary treasurers and honorary secretaries) and the AMiE President.

The full Executive Committee meets seven times a year in London and there are also sub-committee meetings, including finance, branch relations, policy council, independent schools, defence, and rules and procedures. Executive Committee members are automatically members of Conference, and may also become lead members for parts of ATL's work.

The two-year cycle for current Executive members comes to an end on 31 August 2012, and ATL is now beginning the election process.

Candidates must be standard members of ATL and nominated by 10 others, all belonging to the relevant electoral division. Nominators are required to clearly indicate who they are nominating, providing their name and ATL membership number. Candidates must indicate their nomination acceptance by signing a statement to this effect. The returning officer must receive all nominations by 12 noon on Friday, 9 March, 2012. Failure to include membership numbers or submit the required documents by the date specified, as detailed in Clause 32 of the by laws, will render the nomination invalid.

A ballot will be held if the nominations exceed the number of available seats. Within 14 days of the close of nominations, all candidates may submit an electoral address (no more than 300 words), a recent photograph and some biographical details. Canvassing for candidates is permitted only in accordance with a protocol approved by the Executive Committee.

This is a statutory election and is being run according to ATL's by-laws. ATL has appointed an independent scrutineer, Popularis Limited, 6 De Montfort Mews, Leicester LE1 7EU. (Tel: 01162 542259, email annehock@popularis.org).

Copies of all the relevant forms, the canvassing protocol and ATL's by-laws can be downloaded here or are available from Pat Ware (pware@atl.org.uk).
