Health and safety reps

This is an introductory course for all ATL / AMiE health and safety reps and will help you develop the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to perform this essential role in your workplace. The course runs over three terms, with one day/stage per term.

Stage 1: Getting started in the role

This will cover:

  • the trade union approach to health and safety
  • what are the health, safety and welfare issues that members are facing
  • the role of an ATL H&S rep and your statutory rights 
  • an introduction to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • organising around H&S and progressing issues in the workplace.

Stage 2: Inspections and risk assessment

This will cover:

  • an introduction to the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992
  • planning for a workplace inspection
  • understanding the law on risk assessment and the duties on employers
  • identifying the ATL H&S reps role in risk assessment.

Stage 3: Tackling member's issues

This will cover:

  • accident, incident and ill health reporting
  • advising members who have been injured or suffered ill health in the workplace
  • procedures to tackle H&S problems
  • health and safety committees
  • organising around and negotiating on H&S issues.
