Additional payments

Teachers in maintained schools in England and Wales must be paid in accordance with the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document.

They are eligible for certain other allowances including

and the allowances covered on this page. The payment of honoraria is not permitted in any circumstance.

Recruitment allowance

You may be paid a recruitment allowance by your school as an incentive to taking up a post. The recruitment allowance can be paid to you for a maximum of three years and cannot be renewed.

There is no set value for recruitment allowances. You will need to negotiate this with your employer at the start of your contract.

You may be offered other assistance, support or benefit instead of a cash payment. The payment can be made at regular intervals, usually monthly but it could be paid annually.

Retention allowance

You may be paid a retention allowance by your school as an incentive to remain in a post. The recruitment allowance can be paid to you for a maximum of three years and can be renewed if the circumstances for the original award remain.

There is no set value for retention allowances. You will need to negotiate this with your employer.

General Teaching Councils' fee allowance

All teachers must be paid £33 per year if they are required to register with the GTCE or GTCW in respect of the annual registration fee.

The payment is usually made in April.

If you start your contract at any other time of the year or are a supply teacher undertaking their first period of teaching then you should ensure that you are paid the GTC fee allowance.

The GTC fee allowance is paid in full to both full and part-time teachers.

Continuing Professional Development

You may be paid a sum for undertaking continuing professional development outside of the school day. The amount of the payment will be determined by your employer and should be shown in the pay policy.

Initial Teacher Training

You may be paid a sum for activities relating to initial teacher training. The amount of the payment will be determined by your employer and should be shown in the pay policy.

Out-of-school hours learning activity

You may be paid a sum for participating in out-of-school learning activities such as after school clubs. The amount of the payment will be determined by your employer and should be shown in the pay policy.
