Teachers in maintained schools in England and Wales must be paid in accordance with the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document.
They are eligible for certain other allowances including
and the allowances covered on this page. The payment of honoraria is not permitted in any circumstance.
Recruitment or retention allowance
You may be paid a retention allowance by your school as an incentive to remain in a post. There is no set value for retention allowances or set length of time that you can receive them. You will need to negotiate this with your employer.
You may be offered other assistance, support or benefit instead of a cash payment. The payment can be made at regular intervals, usually monthly but it could be paid annually.
General Teaching Council Wales fee allowance
All teachers must be paid £33 per year if they are required to register with the GTCW in respect of the annual registration fee.
The payment is usually made in April.
If you start your contract at any other time of the year or are a supply teacher undertaking their first period of teaching then you should ensure that you are paid the fee allowance.
The fee allowance is paid in full to both full and part-time teachers.
Continuing Professional Development
You may be paid a sum for undertaking continuing professional development outside of the school day. The amount of the payment will be determined by your employer and should be shown in the pay policy.
Initial Teacher Training
You may be paid a sum for activities relating to initial teacher training. The amount of the payment will be determined by your employer and should be shown in the pay policy.
Out-of-school hours learning activity
You may be paid a sum for participating in out-of-school learning activities such as after school clubs. The amount of the payment will be determined by your employer and should be shown in the pay policy.
