Progression

As of 1 September 2013, you may be eligible to progress on your pay scale based either on your length of service or your performance.

From September 2014, all progression will be more closely linked to performance - see ATL's FAQs on changes to teachers' pay for more information.

Main pay scale

Progression on the main pay scale is annual as at 1 September until you reach M6. To progress, your service must have been satisfactory in the previous academic year.

If your service has not been satisfactory then you must be informed and told that you may not be eligible for progression.

If you were paid at M6 during the academic year 2012-13 then you may apply to cross the threshold onto the upper pay range until 31 October 2013 under the existing rules. From 1 September 2013 any teacher can apply to cross the threshold.

Upper pay scale

Progression on the upper pay scale is linked to the outcomes of your performance management reviews.

You need two successful consecutive performance management reviews to be eligible to move to the next point on the upper pay scale. You need also to have demonstrated a substantial and sustained commitment to the school.

You should discuss with your performance management reviewer what is needed for you to progress on the upper pay scale.

You may progress after one year if your service has been deemed to be excellent.

Advanced skills teacher

Progression within your 5 point pay range on the AST pay scale is determined by the outcome of your performance management review. You may progress to the next point every year as at 1 September.

You should discuss with your performance management reviewer what is needed for you to progress.

Leadership Group

Progression within your 5 point pay range on the leadership pay scale (7 points if you are a head teacher) is determined by the outcome of your performance management review. You may progress to the next point every year as at 1 September.

You should discuss with your performance management reviewer what is needed for you to progress.

Unqualified Teachers

Progression on the main pay scale is annual as at 1 September.

To progress your service must have been satisfactory in the previous academic year.

If your service has not been satisfactory then you must be informed and told that you may not be eligible for progression.
