ATL's thinking on the curriculum

The national curriculum principle of entitlement for all was a step forward but its content is a century out of date and leaves young learners progressively demotivated.

ATL argues that we now need a leaner, more focused national curriculum framework from 0-19, organised and assessed around the skills needed by all.

Detailed curriculum would be designed locally. ATL envisages more active learning, improving engagement and encouraging life-long learning, with minimal national testing. We believe this would lead to improved learning, particularly by the current lower achievers, better preparation for adult roles and increased professionalism for teachers.

ATL continues to raise awareness of the issue and to lobby government for change.
