All together for public services

ATL has joined with unions from across education and the wider public sector to back the TUC's campaign against public sector funding cuts.

Government cuts are damaging jobs and services - the programme of swingeing cuts was set out in the spending review on 20 October, but more are set to come.

Ministers tell us that there is no alternative. But the cuts won't just hit vital services, they threaten economic recovery. Coalition policies are not just about reducing the deficit, but undermining publicly accountable quality services.

In education, the school buildings programme has been cut to pay for new academies and so-called free schools that threaten every other school. Before polling day, the Conservatives told us that frontline services would be spared and the vulnerable protected. The Liberal Democrats said that they would oppose early cuts that hit the economy.

Help fight back

A wave of campaigning events have been planned to press the case for an alternative. A mass rally and lobby of Parliament took place on 19 October, and more events are planned, including the TUC's March for the Alternative on 26 March 2011.

You can also lobby your MP about the cuts at any time using the email tool on the TUC website - simply enter your postcode in the orange box to get started.
