ATL is backing 1GOAL: Education for All

ATL plays an active role in the Global Campaign for Education, which brings together child rights activists, teachers' unions and development organisations from around the world united in their determination to make the right to education a reality.

Hundreds of our members participated in the campaign's 2009 action week, making it the biggest to date, with more than a million children and 6,000 schools across the UK participating in activities designed to raise awareness of the plight of the world's 75 million children who don't go to school.

In 2010 the campaign is gearing up to generate even more community interest and political will in support of education.

"With only five years to go to the deadline for the achievement of the Millennium Development and Education for All goals we urgently need to redouble our efforts," said ATL general secretary Dr Mary Bousted.

"75 million children are still not in primary school, 226 million children are not in secondary school, 776 million adults are illiterate and the majority of those denied an education are female.

"Education for All is urgently needed if we are to tackle poverty, ill-health and hunger and the Global Campaign for Education's new 1GOAL campaign aims to ensure every child worldwide has the chance of an education by 2015."

With the FIFA World Cup in South Africa global attention will be focussed on the continent which houses 50 per cent of the world's uneducated children.

FIFA has committed to leaving a legacy of education to the world by driving mass awareness and participation and through 1GOAL will be asking millions of football fans to sign up to support 'Education for All' during the 2010 World Cup.

ATL is delighted to be part of the campaign and will be participating in a range of activities in the lead up to the World Cup as part of 1GOAL.
