This research report from 2005 finds strong evidence of the effect of student financing arrangements on teacher recruitment. While the training grant and 'golden hellos' appear to have had a beneficial effect on both recruitment and the standard of living for some trainees, this report finds that most new teachers start their careers with debts of up to £10,500.
While 70% of respondents said that they were happy with their standard of living throughout their training, the report warns against complacency; arguing that further research is needed on whether a broad social base of entrants is encouraged or discouraged by the financial support currently on offer.
