Reps in the post-16/FE sector

ATL reps play a vital role providing bespoke information and support to our growing membership working in post-compulsory education settings. Read on for advice about what's happening in the sector.

Sixth form pay

ATL members have decided to reluctantly agree with a no pay offer for 2011/12.

While frustrated at the employer's intransigent position, ATL reps and members feel that the current financial climate is one that is bringing pressures on colleges, staff and the public and this is no time for bullishness.

That members were minded to ask for an indicative ballot does suggest that if a reasonable offer is not tabled for the current 2012-13 negotiations, the vote may swing in favour of industrial action next time.

New guide to working in the FE sector

ATL has produced a new handbook for members working in the further education and sixth form sectors in England. It is also a resource for ATL college reps, branch secretaries and regional officials.

The handbook addresses the main issues and difficulties that are encountered by ATL members working in the post-16 sector - particularly in FE colleges.

Reps survey on recognition and facilities time

ATL is growing in the FE sector and we need to map our presence in FE colleges so we can best focus our efforts and meet the needs of our members. The answers to this survey will also be helpful to the current TUC campaign opposing the coalition government view that reps' facilities time is wasteful and not needed.

Toolbox in one file!

The rep toolbox of guidance and useful documents is an Excel file that contains hyperlinks to key guidance documents that you may wish to refer to and that are given below. Once downloaded you can add documents as well, so this is a living toolbox for you and future reps in your worplace.

You will also find on sheet 1 of the workbook a record sheet that you may wish to use to keep ATL officials/staff informed of what is happening at your college. Simply fill it in and send it to the relevant official.

You can amend the file as you see fit. For example, you may wish to use the record sheet to keep evidence of college negotiations and hyperlink college documents to it.

ATL's national official for post-16 education is Norman Crowther. If you would like clarify issues related to these resources or to provide feedback and ideas on other matters that concern you in your reps role, contact Norman using this form or by calling 020 7782 1552.
