Protect trans and non-binary students

Schools work carefully to engage and communicate with parents and carers appropriately, but the Government is making the job of schools harder not easier.

Commenting after the passing of motion 26 at NEU Annual Conference, Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the National Education Union, said:

"More than 20 years after the abolition of Section 28, the education experience needs to be LGBT+ inclusive. Trans and non-binary students need recognition, support and respect in their school or college, so they can thrive and achieve.

"Inclusive teaching is essential for students who are LGB, trans or non-binary, and it’s also beneficial for all students. Empowering all young people to develop positive attitudes during their time at school is essential – especially at a time when young people are targeted online with divisive ideas.

"The NEU is committed to sharing teaching resources and strategies which help teachers create positive school experiences for all LGBT+ students, including trans and non-binary students. The creation of LGBT+ clubs and networks in schools and colleges is more necessary than ever.

"This Government is failing to support trans workers and trans students. It is regularly stoking up divisions and confusion which directly makes life harder for trans and non-binary students. This places trans and non-binary students and staff at risk. Schools work carefully to engage and communicate with parents and carers appropriately, but the Government is making the job of schools harder not easier."
