Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has written to parents/carers, advising them that they have a right to advance sight of Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) lesson material when they request it.
Niamh Sweeney, Deputy General Secretary of the National Education Union, said:
“It is difficult to see why government is presenting this statement as a significant shift in policy. Guidance on RSHE already heavily advocates for information sharing with parents, including in consultation on the curriculum and viewing examples of resources.
“The NEU supports parents being involved in RSHE. It welcomes the fact that many schools have positively constructed RSE policies with their communities. The Union has signed the pledge by Brook and the Sex Education Forum, which states the importance of engaging with parents and carers to ensure RSE meets the needs of families.”
