Supporting agency workers in education

A strategy for agency workers will challenge unfair Government proposals – such as the threat to AWR - and campaign for tighter monitoring.

Commenting on the passing of Motion 43 at the Annual Conference of the National Education Union, Dr Mary Bousted, Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union, said:

“For too long supply work in education has been dominated by private agencies which hold down educators’ pay whilst profiting from public money which was intended for schools.

“Agency supply workers are not protected by the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD) and too often they are not even protected by the Agency Worker Regulations (AWR).

“It is vital that opposition parties work with the union to develop policies based on our Alternatives to Agencies toolkit; together we can encourage schools, local authorities and MATs to adopt alternative arrangements to agencies.

“A comprehensive strategy for the agency workers that make up the supply workforce will also challenge unfair and unjust Government proposals – such as the Retained EU Law Bill which threatens to repeal the AWR; and campaign to have tighter Government monitoring of AWR standards and compliance.”
