More than a hundred members gathered at the Doubletree Hotel in the City of London on May 20th to enjoy a packed day of debate, networking and learning at the annual ATL Support Staff Conference.

Support Staff Conference “the best ever”

The day kicked off with rousing welcomes from ATL President Niamh Sweeney and Deputy General Secretary Peter Pendle. Peter focussed on the workplace challenges facing all education professionals, and the opportunities for support staff that the new Union, the NEU, will bring.

Everyone then dispersed to their first CPD choice:

Social Media & Developments in Technology was led by Alan Earl, who is a Police Officer in the Avon and Somerset Constabulary’s Internet Child Abuse Team

SEND Code in Practice – Facilitated by ATL Policy Advisor Anne Heavey

Conflict Resolution: Building positive relationships – which was led by Mike Culley of Mike Culley & Associates

After a hale and hearty lunch, with plenty of networking mixed in, members had the opportunity to attend a second CPD session of their choice.

Everyone then re-convened in the main conference room to hear from Durham’s Trish Fay about the ongoing fight of the Durham TAs to secure a fair deal on pay.

The day then ended with a Q&A session led by Support Staff Members Advisory Group (SSMAG) Vice-Chair Cathy Tattersfield and Support Staff National Official Peter Morris.

The clear consensus at the end of the day was that this had been the best-ever Support Staff Conference.
