Notice periods

Notice provisions exist as a protection for both parties to the employment contract. For the employee, they are a reassurance that short of committing gross misconduct, he or she cannot be fired without due notice.

Spring resignations

If you teach in a maintained school in England or Wales and wish to change schools or cease teaching at the end of the spring term you must tender your resignation by 28 February. The usual end date of the spring term is 30 April, however, careful consideration is needed when agreeing a termination date.

Job reference rights

You have no statutory right to a reference from a present or past employer - references are given at the discretion of the employer. References do not have to be given in writing - they can be given verbally, perhaps by telephone.
